For fourteen years, Duke Nukem Forever was the industry's favorite punchline. Announced by 3D Realms in 1997, it churned through engine changes, trailers and missed dates until the words vaporware and Duke Nukem Forever were practically synonyms. Then Gearbox Software took over the project, and in June 2011 the impossible happened: the King actually came back, published by 2K Games.
The game opens with Duke battling a towering Cycloid Emperor in a stadium, a fight that turns out to be Duke playing a video game about himself. That sets the tone: self-aware, juvenile and very fond of its own legend. Duke is now a celebrity living the high life in Las Vegas when the aliens return, and the action ranges from the Lady Killer Casino and the Duke Burger restaurant to the Hoover Dam and a monster-truck run across the Nevada desert. Jon St. John is back as the voice of Duke, firing off one-liners in the same gravelly growl players remember from Duke Nukem 3D.
The arsenal brings back old favorites, including the Shrink Ray, the Devastator, the Ripper, pipe bombs, laser trip mines and Duke's Mighty Foot, and Pig Cops, Octabrains and a hulking Battlelord return to take the punishment. Getting shrunk sends you through levels at action-figure size, including a stretch behind the wheel of a radio-controlled car. Instead of a traditional health bar Duke has an Ego meter, and you raise it by doing very Duke things: lifting weights, playing pinball, scribbling on a whiteboard or admiring himself in a mirror.
Critics were not kind in 2011, and its two-weapon limit and linear levels felt behind the times. Yet Duke Nukem Forever has become a fascinating artifact, a rare game whose development saga is as famous as the game itself, with traces of its long history visible in its eclectic mix of set pieces. For collectors of gaming history and anyone raised on Duke Nukem 3D, owning the disc that ended the industry's longest wait is a story in itself.
Cocked, loaded and ready for action, Duke delivers epic ass-kicking, massive weapons, giant explosions and pure unadulterated fun! Put on your shades and step into the boots of Duke Nukem. The alien hordes are invading and only Duke can save the world. Pig cops, alien shrink rays and enormous alien bosses can’t stop this epic hero from accomplishing his goal: to save the world, save the babes and to be a bad-ass while doing it. The King arrives with an arsenal of over-the-top weapons, non-stop action, and unprecedented levels of interactivity. With hours and hours of action, and a range of bodacious multiplayer modes, rest assured knowing the fun goes on and on.
