Item Description

Most action RPGs give you a hero. Dragon Valor gives you a bloodline. Namco's PlayStation successor to its arcade classic Dragon Buster, developed by Now Production, begins with Clovis Barclay, a commoner from Jirat whose sister Elena is killed by a dragon, and follows the sword he takes up through generations of his descendants, each chapter handing the fight to a new son or daughter.

The twist is that your choices decide who that next hero will be. In the first chapter Clovis must decide whether to save Princess Celia, and the women your heroes marry determine which children inherit the story, which plot events unfold and which ending you reach. The branching paths are named for the legendary swords Azos, Soul and Kadum, and watching a single rescue ripple down the family tree gives the game a pull to replay that recalls the generational structure of Phantasy Star III.

Each chapter sends the current hero through a run of hostile locations and ends with a showdown against a dragon, with foes such as Tempest, Thunder and Hellfire and Inferno waiting at the end of the road. Items permanently raise maximum health, magic, attack and defense, tomes dropped by certain enemies teach new spells, and the currency, Val, buys potions and stat boosts. The threats escalate from rival Azale Knights and a scheming prime minister to the Cult of Dahaka, whose master lies sealed behind the Gates of Gehenna.

Critics were split on it at release, and it is fair to say Dragon Valor is more memorable for its structure than its polish. That structure is exactly why it is worth a look today: it carries Namco's Dragon Buster lineage into 3D, wraps it in a multi-generation family saga and leaves you wondering what would have happened if you had chosen a different bride. It is a distinctive and often overlooked late-era PlayStation action RPG, best experienced on the hardware it was built for.

About the game

Dragon Valor is a 1999 action role-playing game developed by Now Production and published by Namco for the PlayStation. It is the second sequel to Dragon Buster. In the Dragon Valor world, dragons are powerful monsters. The player's role as a Dragon Valor is to slay them with a magical sword passed down through successive generations. Similar to Phantasy Star III, Dragon Valor differs from other platform action games of the time because who the protagonist marries changes future playable characters, plot events, and which ending the player receives.
