For a thousand years the Seven Realms lived in peace, thanks to the wisdom of the ancient King Unos. Dragon Quest Heroes II opens on the day that peace shatters. Cousins Lazarel and Teresa, raised in the port kingdom of Harba, are thrown into a war that pits kingdom against kingdom, and their search for whoever lit the fuse sends them across a world that finally feels like a real Dragon Quest map rather than a string of battlefields.
That was the big fix over the first game. Omega Force, the studio behind Dynasty Warriors, still builds the combat around carving through enormous crowds of slimes, drackies and golems with flashy combos and screen-filling special moves, but now you travel between towns and open fields, find treasure chests, run into wandering monsters and hop between visited spots with Zoomstones. Lazarel and Teresa can switch vocations, among them warrior, mage, martial artist and thief, and Monster Medals let you call in monsters to fight alongside you or even take control of some of them.
The cast is a fan's dream. New faces like Cesar, the prince of Dunisia, and Desdemona, royal guard to the King of Accordia, fight beside heroes pulled from across the series: Maribel and Ruff from Dragon Quest VII, Meena and Torneko from Dragon Quest IV, Carver from Dragon Quest VI and Angelo from Dragon Quest VIII. Each plays very differently, with their own weapons, spells and special moves. Akira Toriyama's designs and Koichi Sugiyama's music give everything the series' unmistakable warmth, and the game was also built for cooperative play, with help in the story and four-player online missions in the Time-Space Labyrinth.
Released in Japan in 2016 and on PlayStation 4 in North America in April 2017, it earned a near-perfect score from Famitsu and is widely seen as the stronger of the two Heroes games. It is lighter than a mainline adventure, but as a celebration of the whole series, with the crowd-clearing joy of a musou game, it hits a sweet spot that no other Dragon Quest does.
"DRAGON QUEST HEROES II is a hack-and-slash, field-roaming Action RPG that sends players on a new adventure to restore order in a once peaceful world filled with hordes of monsters and battles of epic proportions. Up to 4 players can band together in cooperative multiplayer to conquer swarms of enemies and defeat challenging boss monsters. There is also a cast of many playable characters each with unique moves and abilities – including a host of familiar faces from the DRAGON QUEST series and four brand new heroes that must team up to defeat an unknown threat looming over the Seven Realms!"
