The fights are what you expect from Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot. The fishing trips are what you remember. CyberConnect2, the studio behind the Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm games, set out to tell the whole story of Dragon Ball Z as an action RPG, and it understood that the series was never only about screaming energy beams. It is also about Goku being a terrible driver, Gohan surviving alone in the wilderness, and everybody gathering for an enormous meal between catastrophes.

The main story covers all four great arcs of the anime: the Saiyan arrival with Raditz, Nappa and Vegeta; the war against Frieza on Namek, including the Ginyu Force and Goku's first Super Saiyan transformation; the Androids and the Cell Games; and the final battles with Majin Buu. Battles play out in fast, flying arenas where you rush, blast and teleport around opponents, and the big moments are staged with the bombast fans want. You play primarily as Goku but also take control of Gohan at different ages, Vegeta, Piccolo and Future Trunks, with fusions such as Gotenks and Vegito joining the fight in the Buu arc.

Between the fights, the world opens up. You fly across open areas on the Nimbus or under your own power, collect Z Orbs to unlock new skills, hunt for ingredients and cook meals that give lasting boosts, and take on side stories with the supporting cast, from Krillin and Yamcha to Bulma and Chi-Chi. Soul Emblems earned from characters slot into Community Boards that grant bonuses, and there are memorable detours like Goku and Piccolo's famous driving lessons. The pacing gives the story room to breathe in a way fighting games never could.

Dragon Ball has had dozens of games, but few retell Z this thoroughly or with this much affection for the quieter moments between arcs. Kakarot is the version of the story you can live inside rather than simply watch, a PlayStation 4 love letter to every kid who raced home to catch the next episode.
