Item Description

Long before the arena fighters took Dragon Ball into open skies, Dimps' Budokai games defined what a Dragon Ball Z fighter felt like for a generation of PlayStation 2 players. This PlayStation 3 collection brings back the two bookends of that trilogy, the original Budokai and Budokai 3, remastered in high definition with full trophy support, so the series' cel-shaded style finally gets the crisp image it always suggested.

The first Budokai is the story-driven one. It walks through the Saiyan, Frieza and Android arcs up to the Cell Games, with cel-shaded cutscenes that restage moments every fan remembers, and it introduced the Skill Capsule system that lets you build out a fighter's techniques and transformations to your liking. Battles play on a tight 3D plane with beam struggles, transformations and signature moves pulled straight from the show, and it has a directness and weight that later, flashier games traded away.

Budokai 3 is the reason many players still talk about this series. The combat speeds up dramatically, with Hyper Mode, teleport counters and Dragon Rush exchanges giving fights a back-and-forth tension that rewards real skill, and the roster reaches into Dragon Ball GT for fighters like Super Saiyan 4 Goku. Its Dragon Universe story mode lets you fly a character around a world map between battles, hunting Dragon Balls and stumbling into side events, which turns a fighting game's story into something closer to an adventure.

The collection carries one notable change that longtime fans should know about. Both games have entirely new soundtracks, assembled from music used in later Dragon Ball games plus new compositions and the American Dragon Ball Z theme, after the original scores by Kenji Yamamoto were accused of plagiarism. The optional Japanese voice track is a welcome addition for fans who grew up on the original cast. Budokai 2 was not included, but the pairing of the series' story-heavy debut with its fan-favorite finale makes this a satisfying way to revisit the trilogy's high points on one PlayStation 3 disc.

About the game

The game is an HD collection that features both Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 1 and Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 3 enhanced and re-mastered in HD, alongside full Trophy and Achievements support. The graphics of Budokai 3 HD are similar to those of Dragon Ball Z: W Bakuretsu Impact. Since Kenji Yamamoto's original soundtracks have been accused of plagiarism, both included games have entirely new soundtracks mixed from the soundtracks of Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 2, Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3, Dragon Ball: Raging Blast, Dragon Ball Z: Tenkaichi Tag Team, and Dragon Ball Z: Ultimate Tenkaichi, plus entirely new music and the American Dragon Ball Z theme song from the original game and show. Both games also support the optional original Japanese language track (but in Europe, only Japanese is available for Budokai 1, much like the original release).
