Item Description

Nearly every Dragon Ball game hands you Goku. Dragon Ball: The Breakers hands you an ordinary townsperson with a few gadgets and a very bad day, then sets Cell loose on the map. Developed by Dimps, the studio behind the Budokai and Xenoverse games, it reimagines the series as an asymmetrical survival game in the vein of Dead by Daylight: seven survivors against one overwhelmingly powerful Raider.

Survivors are pulled through a rip in time called the Temporal Seam, and their only way home is the Super Time Machine. Each map is split into areas that hide Power Keys, and once all of them are placed the machine descends and the race to activate it begins. The Raider wins by wiping out the survivors or destroying the machine first. The tension comes from the Raider's evolution: Cell, Frieza and Majin Buu, the villains available at launch, each grow through several evolution stages by hunting survivors and civilians, so a slow start for the Raider can turn into an unstoppable monster by the end of a match. Buu even needs Spopovich and Yamu to gather energy before he can be summoned.

Survivors are not entirely helpless. The Transphere lets them briefly channel the power of heroes like Goku, Vegeta and Yamcha, enough to escape, distract or, in a desperate moment, fight back. The seven Dragon Balls scattered across the map can summon Shenron for a game-changing wish, and planning who goes for the Keys and who gambles on the Dragon Balls gives every lobby its own strategy. The tone is bright and slapstick rather than horror, packed with in-jokes and familiar locations for longtime fans.

The Breakers was designed as an online multiplayer game first, an unusual experiment for a franchise usually defined by one-on-one fighting games and story-driven action RPGs. It is the rare Dragon Ball game where you are nobody special, which makes it a fascinating oddity in the franchise's long gaming history and a fun one for collectors who track every corner of the series on PlayStation 4.
