Item Description

Spike spent the PlayStation 2 years turning Budokai Tenkaichi into the go-to Dragon Ball fighter, and Raging Blast 2 is the studio's second run at bringing that over-the-shoulder, fly-anywhere style to HD hardware. The pitch is pure Dragon Ball: more than 90 characters, destructible arenas, and fights that tear across the landscape as Pursuit Attacks juggle an opponent through rock formations and into the next valley.

The roster is the main event. Beyond the expected forms of Goku, Vegeta, Gohan and Frieza, it adds 20 fighters new to the Raging Blast series, among them the movie villains Turles and Janemba, Dabura from the Buu saga, Hatchiyack, Future Gohan, Pikkon, Nail and Tarble, Vegeta's younger brother, in his first video game appearance. The new Raging Soul system shuts off a character's ki blasts in exchange for heavily boosted physical attacks, which turns the end of a close match into a slugfest.

Instead of a straight story mode, Galaxy Mode presents each character as a planet with branching mission paths that hand you advantages or handicaps, and clearing them unlocks power-ups and new routes. Battle Zone and a World Tournament with Tenkaichi Budokai and Cell Games-style brackets fill out the solo side, and two players can settle arguments in local versus. The game also contains a remake of the 1993 special Plan to Eradicate the Super Saiyans, redone with modern animation and around 30 minutes of new footage, a curiosity Dragon Ball fans rarely find elsewhere.

Reviews were mixed, with critics wishing for a proper story mode and less repetitive AI, but the deep roster and that remade special give it a clear identity among the many Dragon Ball fighters on the Xbox 360. It sits neatly between the first Raging Blast and Ultimate Tenkaichi on a 360 Dragon Ball shelf, and it is the one with Tarble's debut.
