Item Description

A year after the Shadow Warriors fell, Marion has been kidnapped again, and this time the trail leads around the world. In Double Dragon III: The Sacred Stones, the fortune teller Hiruko warns Billy and Jimmy Lee that the kidnappers are after three Sacred Stones of Power, and that the brothers must collect them first. The hunt takes them through China, Japan and Italy before a final showdown in Egypt with the organization's true leader.

Technos built this NES entry very differently from the arcade game, and the biggest change is that you assemble a team. Beat the martial artist Chin Seimei at the end of Mission 2 and he joins your side, and the ninja clan head Yagyu Ranzou follows after Mission 3. The traditional lives system is gone: press Select to swap fighters on the fly, each with his own health and speed, and when one falls the next steps in until the whole party is down. Every fighter also carries a backup weapon with limited use, nunchaku for the Lee brothers, an iron claw for Chin and shuriken for Ranzou, who also fights with a sword.

Two players can fight side by side, with one mode that keeps friendly fire off and another that leaves it on, and when both players control the Lee brothers they can team up for a twin cyclone spin kick and a triangle jump kick. Compared with the Japanese Famicom release, which gave fighters more health at the start of each stage and threw fewer enemies at them, the North American cartridge is the tougher of the two, and it rewards careful spacing and smart use of your roster over button-mashing.

Critics were mixed on it at the time, but its ideas have aged into real curiosity value. Recruitable allies, mid-fight character switching and a globe-trotting quest make it the most experimental chapter of the NES trilogy, and unlike the Japanese version, which changed its finale depending on who survived, the English release always shows the full ending. It's the strange, ambitious last chapter that a complete run through the NES Double Dragon games deserves.
