Most revivals of 1980s beat 'em ups play it safe and simply polish the old formula. Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons does something bolder. Developed by Secret Base and published by Modus Games in 2023, it reimagines the early days of Billy and Jimmy Lee as an alternate origin story set in a ruined New York carved up by gangs, and it rebuilds the classic walk-right-and-punch structure around a roguelite heart where every run plays out a little differently.

You always fight as a pair, tagging between two characters on the fly, so a run becomes a duet of combos and special moves rather than a single brawler slugging it out. The brothers are joined from the start by Marian and Uncle Matin, each with their own special moves and playstyle, and nine more unlockable fighters let you build oddball tag teams once you have earned them. Two players can also team up in local co-op, which turns the tag system into a proper couch partnership.

The structure is the clever part. Instead of a fixed path, you choose the order in which you take on the city's gang bosses, and the difficulty of each mission shifts depending on when you tackle it, so a route that starts gentle gets tougher the deeper you go. Layouts are randomized, enemies are a mix of new and familiar faces, and the money you earn feeds upgrades and unlocks between runs, which keeps the one-more-try pull strong.

Critics generally welcomed it as the best new Double Dragon in a very long time, and it is the rare series revival that respects the arcade roots while giving veterans something new to learn. On PlayStation 5 it is a great pick-up-and-play brawler for two, and the version of the Lee brothers' story that rewards experimenting with every possible tag-team pairing.
