Item Description
Five mana for a 6/6 with flying and trample would be a strong deal on its own, and Doom Whisperer adds a second weapon: pay 2 life to surveil 2. Each activation lets you look at the top two cards of your library and send any of them to your graveyard, so you can sculpt your next draws, dig for a specific answer or fill the graveyard for recursion and delve-style payoffs.
The Nightmare Demon is a fierce attacker and a tool at once. With a healthy life total you can surveil several times in a single turn, setting up your draws perfectly, and graveyard decks love having that much control over what gets binned. In Commander, where you start at 40 life, the life cost is easy to pay, which makes the Whisperer a favorite top-end creature for black decks. Guilds of Ravnica introduced surveil as the signature mechanic of House Dimir, and this mythic shows the mechanic at its most aggressive.
This is the Guilds of Ravnica printing, collector number 69, illustrated by Vincent Proce, in non-foil. Proce's shadowy demon matches the flavor text: "The sound of every twisted secret tempts you to hear another."
