Item Description
When Doom arrived on the PC in 1993, it didn't just change gaming, it redefined what people thought a home computer could do to your nerves. Bringing that experience to consoles became a challenge for a generation of hardware, and id Software's hellish masterpiece eventually found its way onto many platforms of the era. The Sega 32X version, released in North America on November 21, 1994 as one of the add-on's six launch games, holds a particular place in that history as one of the earliest console versions of Doom, and it remains one of the most interesting artifacts of a strange moment in Sega's hardware story.
The 32X itself was Sega's ambitious attempt to extend the life of the Genesis: an add-on that plugs in like a cartridge and adds two 32-bit SH-2 processors. Marketed as a transitional device between the Genesis and the Saturn, it had a short and turbulent life, with a library of around 40 games before Sega discontinued it in 1996 to focus on the Saturn. Doom was its showcase, a demonstration of what the hardware could do beyond the base Genesis. To make the launch date, John Carmack's port carries 17 of the original 27 levels, all from the first two episodes, played in a cropped window, yet the atmospheric dread is intact.
Gameplay is pure classic Doom: first-person demon slaughter through the military bases of Phobos and the research facilities of Deimos. The shotgun, chaingun, chainsaw and rocket launcher are all here, and the level design from John Romero and Sandy Petersen holds up as some of the most cleverly constructed corridor combat ever made. Bobby Prince's metal-influenced score, inspired in part by bands such as Alice in Chains and Pantera, does exactly what it needs to do to keep your pulse elevated from the first room to the last.
It is also a fascinating snapshot of console history: a game at the center of a format war, ported onto a peripheral that was itself fighting to survive, from the wild transitional era of the mid-nineties when every hardware maker was scrambling to stake a claim on the next generation.
