Item Description

The Artifact pulses in your hand like a second heartbeat. Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil returns to the UAC's Mars facility two years after the original game, when a dig site unearths a relic that tears the door to Hell open all over again. The relic turns out to be a weapon, and learning to wield it is what sets this expansion apart from the game it builds on.

The Artifact feeds on the souls of the dead, and once charged it can slow time to a crawl, send you into a berserk rage or briefly make you invulnerable. Each power is guarded by one of the Hell Hunters, demonic bosses you must defeat to claim it, and the climb ends with a showdown against the dragon-like Maledict. Alongside it you get the Grabber, a gravity device that snatches objects out of the air and hurls them back, even catching enemy fireballs in flight, and the long-awaited return of the double-barreled shotgun, as brutal and satisfying here as it was in Doom II. Several new monsters join the Doom 3 bestiary, keeping the fights unpredictable.

Nerve Software worked with id Software on the expansion, and Activision released the Xbox version as a stand-alone game, so it plays without Doom 3 installed. The Xbox disc also carries The Ultimate Doom, Doom II and the Doom II Master Levels as bonuses, which turns it into a compact tour of the series from its 1993 shareware roots to its darkest, most cinematic chapter. The Xbox handled Doom 3's demanding engine impressively, keeping the oppressive lighting and tight, claustrophobic corridors that defined the original.

With faster pacing and a more aggressive arsenal than the base game, Resurrection of Evil is the expansion where Doom 3 learned to cut loose. For a Doom collector on the original Xbox, it is a rare disc that holds both the darkest chapter of its era and the classics that started it all.
