Item Description

Two years after Hell overran the UAC's base on Mars, somebody decided to go back and dig. Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil sends a new marine into the excavation where Dr. Elizabeth McNeil's team has uncovered the Artifact, a weapon from Hell that the ancient Martians sealed away. The instant it's touched, a blast tears open the way to Hell again, and the flashlight-and-shadows nightmare of Doom 3 starts all over.

The Artifact is the expansion's big idea. It takes the place of Doom 3's Soul Cube and feeds on the souls of the dead, and it grows more dangerous as you defeat the three Hell Hunters sent to reclaim it. Each Hunter you destroy adds a new power: Hell Time slows the world to a crawl, Berserk turns your fists into demon-shredding hammers, and Invulnerability makes you untouchable for a few precious seconds. Waiting at the end is the Maledict, the monstrous new form of Doom 3's villain Dr. Betruger.

The arsenal also gets the weapon fans asked for loudest: the double-barreled shotgun, as gloriously excessive up close as it was in Doom II. Alongside it, the Grabber replaces the chainsaw with a physics tool that can snatch enemy fireballs out of the air and hurl them back, along with crates, barrels and anything else lying around. Developed by Nerve Software with id Software and published by Activision, it's tighter and more action-forward than the base game, with more monsters, faster fights and fewer quiet corridors.

On Xbox, Resurrection of Evil was released as a stand-alone game rather than a PC-style add-on, so it doesn't need Doom 3 to play, and the disc also carries ports of The Ultimate Doom, Doom II and the Master Levels for Doom II, plus health bars for every boss. That makes it a compact tour of id's demon-slaying history, from the 1993 original through Doom II's sprawling levels to the id Tech 4 horror of the mid-2000s, on a single Xbox disc.
