Item Description

Doom 3 asks a question no earlier Doom ever did: how brave are you in the dark? id Software rebuilt its most famous series as a slow-burn horror shooter, and the choice that defines it is brutally simple. You can hold a weapon or you can hold a flashlight, never both, so every black corridor becomes a bargain between seeing the threat and being ready to shoot it. Imps claw out of wall panels behind you, possessed staff lurch out of side rooms, and the next scare is always waiting just outside the beam.

The setting is the Union Aerospace Corporation's sprawling research base on Mars, where Dr. Malcolm Betruger's teleportation experiments have torn a path straight into Hell. You arrive as a newly posted marine on the very day it all goes wrong. The story unfolds through radio chatter and a PDA that fills with audio logs, emails and video disks from the base's doomed staff, many of them holding the door codes and storage-locker combinations you need to push deeper. It is a surprisingly human layer of storytelling for a Doom game, and those logs make the base feel like a place where people lived and worked before it became a slaughterhouse.

The arsenal mixes old friends with new terrors. The shotgun, chainsaw, plasma gun and BFG 9000 all return, joined by the Soul Cube, an ancient artifact that tears the life out of demons and feeds it back to you. Hell Knights, Lost Souls, scuttling Trites and the towering Cyberdemon round out a bestiary designed to look its most grotesque under the real-time lighting and shadows that made id's new engine such a showpiece in 2004.

The Xbox version, co-developed by id and Vicarious Visions and released in 2005, added an all-new two-player cooperative campaign the PC original never offered, and it launched with Xbox Live deathmatch, a service long since retired. The Limited Collector's Edition went further, putting full versions of The Ultimate Doom and Doom II alongside the main game, playable solo or in two-to-four-player split-screen, with a concept art gallery and a behind-the-scenes feature on top. That turns one disc into a compact history of the series: the original that started it all, the sequel that perfected the formula, and the reinvention that dragged it into survival horror.

About the game

Doom 3 is a first-person shooter with survival horror elements. Played mostly from a first-person perspective, it sends the player through the corridors and facilities of a research base, fighting waves of enemies while managing limited resources. A signature design choice forces the player to choose between holding a weapon or a flashlight, encouraging a slower, tense pace built around darkness and ambush. The game uses a story-driven structure supported by radio messages, audio logs, and data devices that unlock areas and reveal information. It also includes a separate deathmatch-focused multiplayer mode.
