Item Description

More than 50 songs, and not one of them a repeat. Donkey Konga 3 is the biggest entry in Namco's bongo series by a wide margin, and it is the one North American and European players never got to drum along to at home, because Nintendo released it only in Japan, in early 2005.

Its full Japanese title, Tabe-hōdai! Haru Mogitate 50 Kyoku, promises something like an all-you-can-eat spread of freshly picked spring songs, and the menu lives up to it. The track list runs well past 50 songs, more than 20 beyond what the first two games offered, and none of them carry over from earlier entries. Around 35 are the series' familiar blend of pop, classical and game music, while 21 come straight from Famicom games, which turns the set list into a playable tour of the 8-bit era for anyone who grew up on Nintendo's first console.

The drumming itself is the Donkey Konga formula fans know: left drum, right drum, both at once or a clap, timed to scrolling notes, with the game designed around the DK Bongos and a new batch of minigames added to the mix. Because the music is the main event, the language barrier matters less than you might expect. Menus take a little exploring, but the beat speaks for itself.

For collectors, this is the piece a North American shelf usually cannot fill on its own: the third and final Donkey Konga, released only in Japan and packed with the most music of the three. It completes the trilogy, and its Famicom tracks give it the deepest connection to Nintendo's roots of any game in the series.

About the game

Donkey Konga 3: Tabe-houdai! Haru Mogitate 50 Kyoku is a music video game in the Donkey Kong series developed by Namco and published by Nintendo. Before the second installment was released in North America, Nintendo and Namco had already started plans for the third game in the series, which, unlike the first two Donkey Konga games, was eventually released only in Japan in early 2005. Donkey Konga 3 features a total of 57 track (includes the all new track), over 20 track more than the first two games. 35 of these tunes are the usual classical, pop, and game selections, but an extra 21 tunes from Nintendo Famicom games are included. It also features features all new minigames. The title of "Donkey Konga 3 JP" was given in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
