Item Description

Retro Studios had already reinvented Metroid in first person when Nintendo handed it Donkey Kong, a character who had gone years without a proper console platformer. The studio's answer, Donkey Kong Country Returns, is a love letter to the Super Nintendo trilogy and one of the toughest, most handsomely built side-scrollers on the Wii. The Tiki Tak Tribe has hypnotized the animals of Donkey Kong Island into stealing DK's banana hoard, and the big ape is not about to let that slide.

The level design is the star. Stages are packed with crumbling ruins, collapsing platforms and background details that spill into the foreground, and the classic mine cart and rocket barrel levels are some of the most nerve-wracking in the genre, demanding split-second reactions with no margin for error. Rambi the rhino returns to smash through obstacles, Squawks the parrot helps you sniff out hidden puzzle pieces, and the striking silhouette stages, played against glowing sunsets, look like nothing else in the series. Shaking the Wii Remote makes DK roll, pound the ground or blow on dandelions and flames, tying the motion controls directly to secrets.

Collectors will find plenty to chase. Every stage hides the letters K-O-N-G and a set of puzzle pieces, Cranky Kong runs a shop selling extra lives and helpful items, and Time Attack mode rewards anyone who has mastered a route. Clearing the game opens the brutally demanding Golden Temple and a Mirror Mode for players who want the ultimate test. A second player can join as Diddy Kong, whose jetpack and peanut popgun make co-op a lively team effort.

Kenji Yamamoto's soundtrack weaves David Wise's classic DKC themes into fresh arrangements, giving the jungle an instantly familiar warmth. Donkey Kong Country Returns was later revisited on the 3DS and Switch, but the Wii original is where Retro's revival began, and where its motion-driven controls feel most at home.
