Item Condition

Complete in box: the cartridge, the manual and the box, all original. Original inserts or paperwork shown in the photos are included; display stands and other photography props are not. The photos are of this exact cartridge — look them over closely for its condition, packaging and details. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.

Item Description

Ask a room of Super Nintendo players which Donkey Kong Country is the best and the argument usually ends at the second one. Diddy's Kong Quest flips the original's setup: Kaptain K. Rool has kidnapped Donkey Kong and wants the banana hoard as ransom, so Diddy heads for Crocodile Isle with a new partner, Dixie Kong, whose spinning ponytail lets her helicopter gently across gaps. That single move changes how you approach nearly every jump in the game.

Rare built the island as a pirate-flavored descent into stranger and stranger places: the decks and rigging of Gangplank Galleon, the lava and hot-air balloons of Crocodile Cauldron, the swampy docks of Krem Quay, the rickety roller coasters of Krazy Kremland and the haunted woods of Gloomy Gulch, all the way up to K. Rool's Keep and his flying ship. Diddy and Dixie can team up to toss each other toward hidden ledges, and the animal buddies return in new combinations. Rambi the rhino and Enguarde the swordfish are joined by Squitter the web-shooting spider, Rattly the bouncing rattlesnake and Squawks the parrot, who now carries the Kongs through the air, and some stages turn you into the animal outright.

The secrets run deep. Bonus barrels hide Kremkoins that pay the toll at Klubba's Kiosk and open the way to the hidden Lost World, every stage tucks away a giant DK Coin, and a full 102 percent run is a real expedition. The Kong family keeps you company along the way, with Cranky grumbling through his advice, Funky running flights between worlds, Swanky hosting a quiz show and Wrinkly saving your progress. Two players can share the adventure by tagging in and out, or turn it into a contest.

Then there is David Wise's score, which many players rank among the finest ever written for a game. "Stickerbush Symphony", the drifting, melancholy theme of the bramble stages, is the one people still cover today, but the sea-shanty swagger of the pirate ship and the eerie music of the haunted forest are every bit as good. Pre-rendered visuals that looked impossible on a 16-bit console in 1995, paired with tougher and more inventive level design than the first game, make this the Donkey Kong Country many fans hold up as Rare's high point on the system.
