Item Description

The first four stages look exactly the way you remember: girders, barrels, Pauline at the top and Donkey Kong pounding his chest. Then you clear them, Donkey Kong scoops up Pauline and runs off, and the real game begins. Nintendo's 1994 Donkey Kong for the Game Boy is one of the great bait-and-switches in gaming, a “remake” of the arcade classic that turns out to be a full puzzle-platformer spanning nine worlds and nearly a hundred stages.

Mario is far more athletic here than he was in 1981. He can flip into a handstand to catch falling objects, launch a high jump out of it, backflip and swing on wires, and the stages are built around using those moves cleverly. Most levels are compact puzzles: find the key, carry it to the locked door, and work out how to get both Mario and the key past the traps and enemies in between. Grab Pauline's lost hat, purse and parasol in a stage and you earn a shot at a bonus game for extra lives, a neat nod to the items scattered around the 1981 arcade girders. Every few stages Donkey Kong himself turns up for a showdown, and the journey carries you from a big city through forests, jungles, a ship, icebergs and a towering finale.

It was also a showcase for the Super Game Boy, which launched the same year. On Nintendo's Super NES adapter the game is colorized, gains digitized speech, and plays an ending theme that takes advantage of the Super Nintendo's sound chip, a lovely extra if you own the accessory.

Its influence runs straight through to the Mario vs. Donkey Kong series, which picked up its key-and-door puzzle formula on the Game Boy Advance a decade later, and plenty of fans argue this original is still the purest take on the idea: tightly designed, surprisingly long and full of small “aha” moments. Pick it up expecting an arcade port and you will walk away with a Mario puzzle game that rewards every handstand and backflip you learn.

About the game

Donkey Kong is a Game Boy game which starts out with the premise of being a straight remake of the original Donkey Kong arcade game. Although at first it appears to be just a port, the familiar levels from the arcade game are just a prelude to the real platform jumping adventure. There are 97 levels spread out over 9 worlds. These levels are much more complex than the originals, featuring scrolling backgrounds, numerous objects to collect, and enemies to avoid. Along the way, you will encounter several boss style battles with Donkey Kong, as well. When played on a Super Game Boy, the game is colorized, digitized speech is added and the ending music takes advantage of the SNES sound chip.
