Toro Inoue is a small white cat with one great wish: to become human. In Doko Demo Issho he is one of five Pokepi who can move into your apartment, and the only way they can learn what being human means is by talking with you. Developed by Bomber eXpress and published in Japan by Sony Computer Entertainment in 1999, it is less a game you beat than a companion you raise, one word at a time.

Conversation is the whole mechanic. You teach your Pokepi new words, answer the questions it asks, and hear that vocabulary come back in its own chatter, so the more you put in, the more it has to say. The personality that grows is shaped entirely by what you choose to teach, which makes every household's Toro a little different. It is gentle, funny and personal in a way very few PlayStation games even tried to be.

The game was designed hand in hand with the PocketStation, Sony's tiny Japanese memory-card handheld, which let players take a Pokepi along and keep interacting away from the television. That pairing was a big reason the PocketStation sold so well in Japan, and it explains the title itself, which translates roughly as "Together Everywhere."

From this beginning Toro grew into something close to an unofficial PlayStation mascot in Japan, anchoring a long-running series that included a 2004 PSP remaster of this very game and even crossing over as a guest fighter in the PlayStation versions of Street Fighter X Tekken. The original PlayStation release is where it all started, a Japan-only slice of Sony history that captures the quirky, experimental spirit of the console's home market.

Doko Demo Issyo (どこでもいっしょ, Together Everywhere) is a 1999 Video Game developed by Bomber Express and published by Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. for the PlayStation, released on July 22, 1999 in Japan. Doko Demo Issyo was one of the games that used the PocketStation; it was instrumental in making the device sell so well in Japan. It is the first game in the Doko Demo Issyo Series. Doko Demo Issyo is a communication game, a game where you interact with the characters through words and phrases. The player can choose from five characters known as Pokepi and interact with them in an apartment. They can be taught words, and the player can answer questions asked by them. The biggest feature of Doko Demo Issyo is its compatibility with the PocketStation, a handheld device that often came packaged with the game, and its reliance on the device made the PocketStation required to play the game. It allowed the player to take any of the Pokepi with them anywhere, and they can continue to interact through the device. A remaster of the game was released on the PlayStation Portable on December 7, 2004 for the franchise's 5th anniversary.
