Item Description

When Capcom handed Dante to Ninja Theory, the British studio behind Heavenly Sword and Enslaved, longtime fans were furious. The white hair was gone, the attitude was rawer, and the gothic castles were replaced by a modern city. Then DmC: Devil May Cry came out, critics praised it, and it turned out the reboot understood what made the series exciting in the first place: combat that rewards creativity and keeps you chasing a higher style rank.

This Dante lives in Limbo City, a modern metropolis secretly ruled by the demon king Mundus through debt, surveillance, a propaganda news network and a popular energy drink. Pulled into Limbo, a twisted parallel version of the city where buildings shift and streets tear apart to trap him, Dante teams up with a young psychic named Kat and his brother Vergil, leader of a resistance group called The Order. It is a sharp, punk-rock satire, and the bosses lean right into it, from a vile Succubus to a showdown with a smug demon news anchor fought inside his own broadcast.

The combat is built around Dante's mixed heritage. Holding one trigger switches to angelic weapons like the Osiris scythe for wide, crowd-controlling sweeps; holding the other switches to demonic tools like the Arbiter axe for crushing blows; and Rebellion and his pistols fill the gaps. Grappling moves let him pull enemies toward him or yank himself across the battlefield, so combos flow seamlessly between weapons and between foes. The bright, surreal art design and a pounding soundtrack from Combichrist and Noisia give the action plenty of punch.

DmC is a bold, divisive chapter in Devil May Cry history and a great action game on its own terms, the version of Dante that took the series somewhere completely new before Capcom returned to the classic timeline with Devil May Cry 5. On PlayStation 3, it is the original release of Ninja Theory's reboot, and well worth revisiting with fresh eyes.

About the game

DmC: Devil May Cry is the fifth game in the hack-and-slash third-person action series and the first not largely developed by Capcom. This title is a reimagining of the series, with the same protagonist Dante, but set in an alternate universe. The Dante in this game is very different from before, doing away with the trademark white hair and altering the main character as well as the game's tone with a much more Western influence. The gameplay is still largely identical as Dante engages many opponents with a fast fighting style, stringing together combos and hits in quick succession.
