Item Description

The twelfth cycle of war between Cosmos and Chaos has begun, and a new set of warriors has been summoned to fight it. Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy, the duodecim of the title, is the prequel and dramatic expansion of Square Enix's Final Fantasy fighting game, and this is the original Japanese release from March 2011, where it opened at the top of the Japanese sales charts in its first week.

The roster grows to 31 fighters. Lightning, Vaan, Laguna, Yuna, Kain and Tifa join from the start, while Prishe from Final Fantasy XI, the sword-collecting Gilgamesh and the mysterious Feral Chaos wait to be unlocked. Each plays completely differently: Laguna sprays machine-gun fire, Tifa brawls up close, Yuna commands summoned beasts, and Kain leaps across the arena. The Bravery and HP rhythm of the original returns, building tension until a decisive HP attack lands, and the new Assist system lets you call in a partner to extend a combo or break an opponent's momentum, a deliberate counterweight to the explosive EX Mode.

The story mode now plays out on a classic Final Fantasy world map, where parties of up to five explore, pick up items and run into crystalline Manikins, giving the campaign the feel of a traditional RPG between battles. It follows the warriors of the twelfth cycle, then remakes the original Dissidia's story on the same map with added scenes that link the two, and a further chapter unlocks after that. With equipment, abilities and character builds to fine-tune, the RPG systems run deep.

Tetsuya Nomura's character designs and the music, arrangements of decades of Final Fantasy themes, make it a celebration of the series. For import collectors, the Japanese edition offers the original Japanese voice cast, including Kenshō Ono as Vaan. The battles themselves read clearly enough to enjoy regardless of language, though menus and story are in Japanese, and as a portable crossover packed with heroes from across the franchise, it sits alongside its predecessor as a cornerstone of a Japanese Final Fantasy collection.
