Item Description

Valvatorez is a vampire who once terrified the Netherworld, and now he teaches Prinnies and talks about sardines. Lots of sardines. He lost most of his power after he stopped drinking human blood to keep a promise he made long ago, and he would rather stay weak than break his word. Disgaea 4: A Promise Unforgotten builds its whole story around that stubborn sense of honor, and it is the funniest, warmest cast Nippon Ichi has assembled.

When the Netherworld government turns on the Prinnies in his care, Valvatorez starts a revolution to overthrow its corrupt president. He gathers a delightfully odd crew along the way: his loyal werewolf servant Fenrich, Fuka, a girl convinced she is having a very bizarre dream, and Desco, an artificial monster determined to become a proper final boss. The story mixes political satire, slapstick and real heart, with recurring gags you will be quoting long after the credits.

Underneath the jokes is one of the deepest tactics games on the PlayStation 3. Battles play out on grid maps shaped by colored Geo Panels, which can buff, hurt or chain explosive reactions across the field. Characters can stack into towers, monsters can Magichange into weapons for human allies, and new to Disgaea 4, monsters can Fuse into giant forms with huge reach. The Cam-Paign HQ lets you arrange your units on a map to unlock bonuses, and the Netherworld Senate returns, where you can bribe or bully demons into passing bills. Then there is the Item World, a randomly generated dungeon inside every piece of equipment. With levels that climb to 9999, the post-game can run for hundreds of hours.

It was also the first Disgaea built for HD, with sharp, hand-drawn sprites that brought the series' cartoon style to big screens. A later Vita release, A Promise Revisited, followed, but this PS3 original is where Valvatorez's tale first played out. It is the entry many series fans point to first, and a great starting point for anyone curious about Nippon Ichi's style of strategy RPG.
