Item Description

Four Digimon, one arena, and a stage that is actively out to get everyone: Digimon Rumble Arena 2 is a party brawler first and foremost. Bandai's 2004 follow-up to the original Rumble Arena, released in Japan as Digimon Battle Chronicle, takes the free-for-all approach of Super Smash Bros. and gives it a Digimon twist, with health meters, flashy special attacks and the chance to collect digi-orbs and Digivolve into a stronger form in the middle of a fight.

Counting their digivolved forms, the roster tops 40 fighters, each with its own moves and super-powered special attacks. The arenas are just as much a part of the action as the fighters. Steam and fire vent from leaky pipes, springy treetops and a rickety bridge send you flying, and one stage's conveyor belts and suction tubes can turn you into a tin can. That unpredictability is exactly what makes it work as a split-screen party game, when friends are piling on each other and nobody is quite sure who will be left standing.

Critics at the time were lukewarm on its depth, but Rumble Arena 2 was never trying to be a tournament fighter. It is a loud, colorful slice of mid-2000s Digimon fandom, released on PlayStation 2, GameCube and Xbox while the anime still had a devoted audience. If you grew up choosing a favorite partner Digimon, this is a fun way to settle which one really is the strongest.
