Item Condition

Complete in box: the cartridge, the manual and the box, all original; anything beyond that is included only if you can see it in the photos. For the specifics, look to the photos — they're of this exact item. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.

Item Description

Dig Dug might be the most cheerful game ever made about inflating monsters until they pop. You start at the surface, burrow down into layered earth, and every tunnel you carve becomes part of the battlefield. Pookas, the round red creatures in goggles, and Fygars, the green fire-breathing dragons, roam the dirt in search of you, and your only weapon is an air pump. Hook an enemy and pump until it bursts, or ease off and it will slowly deflate and come after you again.

The smarter play is often to dig under a rock and let it fall on whatever is following you. Crushing several enemies with a single rock pays off handsomely, dropping two rocks in a round makes a bonus vegetable appear in the center of the screen, and enemies caught in deeper layers are worth more points. Leave a monster alone too long and it turns into a pair of floating eyes that drift through solid earth, so standing still is never safe. When only one enemy is left, it makes a run for the surface, and catching it before it escapes is a small victory every time. Even the music is part of the game: the bouncy walking tune plays only while you are moving.

Namco released Dig Dug in arcades in 1982, and Atari brought it to the 5200 in 1983 as one of the console's most faithful arcade conversions. The hero was later named Taizo Hori, and his son Susumu became the star of Namco's Mr. Driller series. Dig Dug's blend of strategy and arcade speed has kept it fun for decades, and the 5200 version is an easy pick for quick, satisfying sessions on original hardware.

About the game

Dig Dug is a 1-2 player arcade game in which you have to use your shovel to dig your way through the earth. Stopping you from doing this are two monsters, called Pooka and Fygar, who will continually chase you around. The only weapon that you carry is an air pump, which you can use to inflate the monsters to the point where they explode. (if you start to inflate them but stop doing so, the monsters will get turned back to their normal selves). Furthermore, rocks are scattered throughout the earth, and you can use these rocks to squash them. If the monsters do not find you for several seconds, they will eventually get turned into ghosts, which can walk through the earth. They are invincible and cannot be killed. From time to time, vegetables will appear in the center, and you can get these for points.
