Complete in box: the cartridge, the manual and the box, all original; anything beyond that is included only if you can see it in the photos. Look over the photos for condition, packaging and details. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.

Item Description

Mario Kart gave you cups. Diddy Kong Racing gave you an island. Rare's 1997 Nintendo 64 racer dropped you onto Timber's Island, a hub world to explore by kart, hovercraft and plane, with races, bosses and secrets stitched into an actual adventure. Diddy Kong Racing DS is Rare's own remake of that game and the studio's first project for the DS, rebuilt with the stylus and wireless racing in mind.

The heart of it is intact. Wizpig, the bloated space pig, has taken over the island, and the only way to stop him is to win races across its themed worlds and defeat the boss guarding each one: Tricky the triceratops, Bluey the walrus, Bubbler the octopus and Smokey the dragon, before facing Wizpig himself. Picking the right vehicle for each course, wheels on the road, hovercraft over the water, wings through the sky, is what makes Diddy Kong Racing feel so different from its rivals.

The DS version changes plenty around that foundation. Banjo and Conker, whose rights stayed with Rare after its move to Microsoft, were replaced by Tiny Kong and Dixie Kong. Taj and Wizpig became unlockable racers, a hidden Drumstick waits to be found, and the coins you collect now feed Taj's Wishes, a shop of vehicle upgrades and unlockables including new tracks. Stylus and microphone challenges join the mix, from popping golden balloons on the touchscreen to blowing out torches, and the hunt for pieces of T.T.'s amulet gives completionists fresh goals.

It also supported up to eight racers through local wireless and was built for online races over Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, a service that has since shut down. Reviewers were mixed on the new touch gimmicks, but the adventure structure that made the original special survives, and the Kong-flavored roster makes it a fascinating piece of Rare history: the moment one of its classics carried on at Nintendo without two of its original stars.
