Lilith has come home to Sanctuary, and she is not here to make peace. Summoned back into the world she helped create, the Daughter of Hatred spreads corruption across the land while the angel Inarius and his zealots wage their own holy war, and your hero is caught in the middle. Diablo IV is Blizzard's deliberate return to the series' gothic roots: after the brighter palette of Diablo III, this is a world of rain-soaked villages, flayed cultists, bone-strewn cathedrals and some of the most unsettling cinematics the studio has ever produced.
Five classes launched with the game, the Barbarian, Sorcerer, Rogue, Druid and Necromancer, and each splits into very different builds through its skill tree, Legendary aspects and the Paragon Board that opens up once you reach the endgame. A Necromancer can command an army of skeletons or walk alone as a blood-soaked caster; a Druid can shapeshift between werewolf and werebear or call down storms. The thrill of the loot chase is as strong as ever, with every Unique drop promising a new way to break the game.
The biggest change is the map. For the first time, Sanctuary is one connected open world spread across five regions: the snowbound Fractured Peaks, the forests of Scosglen, the Dry Steppes, the deserts of Kehjistan and the swamps of Hawezar. Mounts carry you between Strongholds to liberate, side quests, world bosses and dungeons, and Diablo IV was built as a shared online world where other players appear around you in towns and events like the Helltide. On console, it also supports couch co-op, so two players can carve through hell side by side on one screen.
Endgame Nightmare Dungeons push your build to its limits, and Blizzard designed the game around ongoing seasons that add new mechanics and fresh starts. Still, the campaign is the part that lingers. It is a grim, character-driven story with a terrific villain in Lilith, and it gives the franchise the dark, oppressive atmosphere longtime players remember from Diablo II while bringing the fluid, satisfying combat of the modern era to the PlayStation 5.
