Item Description

The stylish-action genre started with a happy accident. Devil May Cry began life at Capcom as a prototype for Resident Evil 4, until director Hideki Kamiya's team realized its acrobatic, sword-and-pistols hero was far too flamboyant for survival horror. Devil May Cry HD Collection gathers the PlayStation 2 trilogy that came out of that experiment, Devil May Cry, Devil May Cry 2 and Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening Special Edition, remastered in high definition on PlayStation 3 with trophy support added.

The original Devil May Cry set the template: Dante, a white-haired demon hunter, storms the gothic castle of Mallet Island at the invitation of the mysterious Trish, juggling enemies in the air with his sword and his twin pistols while a style meter grades every fight on flair as well as efficiency. It is still a tough, focused and atmospheric action game, and its puzzles and boss battles carry a shadowy, almost horror-flavored tone the later games moved away from.

Devil May Cry 2 is the most divisive chapter, a bigger but more subdued game with a second campaign starring the new heroine Lucia, and having it here completes the story. The real prize is Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening Special Edition, a prequel that shows a younger, cockier Dante facing off against his twin brother, Vergil. Many fans consider it the high point of the series. Its style system lets you choose how Dante fights, as a nimble Trickster, a weapon-juggling Swordmaster, a Gunslinger or a parrying Royal Guard, and the Special Edition makes Vergil fully playable and adds the Bloody Palace survival mode.

Playing the three back to back is a great way to see how the series grew, from the gothic atmosphere of the original to the punk-rock energy of DMC3. The HD treatment holds up well on PS3, the combat still feels sharp and the bosses are as memorable as ever. It is the place to get the full origin story of Dante before Devil May Cry 4 and the games that followed.
