A demonic tree has punched up through the heart of Red Grave City, feeding on the blood of everyone beneath its roots, and three very different demon hunters are going in to cut it down. Devil May Cry 5, directed by Hideaki Itsuno and built on Capcom's RE Engine, was the first numbered entry in more than a decade, and it came back swinging with some of the most exhilarating combat Capcom has ever produced.

Nero carries much of the story. Having lost his demonic right arm, he fights with Devil Breakers, swappable prosthetics built by the foul-mouthed weaponsmith Nico, each with its own trick, from Overture's electric blast to Gerbera's shockwave dodge and the rocket-fist Punch Line. Break one mid-combo and you can detonate it to escape a tight spot. Dante, older and as smug as ever, switches between four combat styles, Trickster, Swordmaster, Gunslinger and Royal Guard, and adds absurd new weapons like Cavaliere, a motorcycle that splits into a pair of buzzsaws.

Then there is V, the newcomer and the game's boldest idea. A frail, poetry-quoting stranger with a cane, he barely fights himself; instead he commands three demonic familiars, the wisecracking bird Griffon, the panther-like Shadow and the towering golem Nightmare, and steps in only to deliver the finishing blow. Each hunter plays like a separate action game, and the Stylish rank, climbing from D to SSS, pushes you to keep every combo varied. The vocal battle themes build as your rank rises, so a flawless run makes Nero's Devil Trigger or Dante's Subhuman hit at full force.

Capcom wrapped that mechanical depth in photorealistic visuals and a story that ties together threads stretching back to the PlayStation 2 era, giving the Sparda family saga its biggest climax yet. Devil May Cry 5 earned wide acclaim on release, and on PS4 it is the entry where Nero finally comes into his own, a character action game that keeps rewarding practice long after the credits roll.
