Every Praxis point you spend in Deus Ex: Human Revolution is a quiet statement about how you want to play. Pour them into hacking and the world opens through locked doors and security terminals. Choose stronger arms and you can punch through walls or lift a vending machine to reach an air duct. Buy the cloaking system and whole levels become a game of patience. Few action games trust the player this much, and that freedom is what made Eidos Montréal's revival of the series feel so special.

It is 2027, and human augmentation is changing the world faster than society can cope with. Adam Jensen is head of security at Sarif Industries in Detroit, until a black-ops attack kills the scientists he was hired to protect, apparently including Megan Reed, and leaves him so badly wounded that his employer rebuilds him with the very technology at the heart of the conflict. His investigation spreads from Detroit's grimy streets to the multi-level city of Hengsha in China and beyond, uncovering a conspiracy that ties directly into the 2000 original.

Each mission offers several routes: a loud firefight, a silent ghost run, a hacked turret doing the work for you, or a well-placed vent to avoid trouble altogether. Third-person cover and brutal takedowns blend with first-person shooting and exploration, and some of the best confrontations are conversations, tense verbal duels where reading a character and choosing the right argument matter more than aim. The boss fights, which force direct combat, were the one widely criticized part of the game, but they are short interruptions in a long, rich adventure.

Published by Square Enix, Human Revolution won strong reviews for its writing, freedom and style. The black-and-gold visual design draws on Renaissance art, Michael McCann's moody electronic score fits it perfectly, and Jensen's "I never asked for this" became a gaming catchphrase. On PlayStation 3 it is a big, thoughtful immersive sim that rewards a second playthrough with a completely different approach.
