Item Description
It is 2027, and human augmentation has split the world in two. Adam Jensen, head of security at Detroit's Sarif Industries, is nearly killed when a black-ops team storms the company's labs, and he wakes up rebuilt with mechanical limbs he never asked for. Eidos Montréal's Deus Ex: Human Revolution follows him from Detroit to the towering Chinese city of Hengsha and beyond as he pulls on the threads of a conspiracy that reaches into the shadowiest corners of power.
What makes it Deus Ex is the freedom in how you play. Nearly every objective can be approached through combat, stealth, hacking or conversation, and the Praxis points you earn buy augmentations that open those paths wider: the Icarus Landing System lets Jensen drop from rooftops unharmed, cloaking and enhanced vision make him a ghost, reinforced arms punch through walls and shift heavy obstacles, and the Typhoon system turns him into a walking explosion. Levels are threaded with vents, side routes and hidden rooms, so whichever build you choose, the world has a way through for it.
Conversations are battles too. Key social encounters play out like duels of words, with Jensen reading a speaker's personality to talk down a hostage-taker or win a heated argument, and a social augmentation helps him read people even better. The world is drenched in a black-and-gold palette inspired by the Renaissance, and Michael McCann's synth-laden score gives Detroit and Hengsha a mournful, gorgeous atmosphere. Reviews were glowing, with the main reservation being a handful of combat-only boss fights that ignore the freedom found everywhere else.
As a prequel to Ion Storm's original 2000 Deus Ex, it had a near-impossible legacy to live up to, and it managed it, reviving the series for a new generation and leading directly to Mankind Divided. Square Enix published it in 2011, and the Xbox 360 version is a great way to experience Jensen's story on original hardware, with branching choices and multiple playstyles that make a second run feel like a different game.
