Your Ghost finds you among the rusted cars of Old Russia, a dead colony ship looming over the Cosmodrome, and within minutes Destiny makes its case. This was Bungie's first new universe after a decade of Halo, published by Activision in 2014, and it carried the studio's famously precise gunplay into a mythic science-fiction setting. Humanity's Last City huddles beneath the Traveler, a vast and silent white sphere that once lifted mankind into a golden age and now hangs wounded in the sky, and it falls to you to push back the darkness closing in around it.
You play a Guardian, raised from death by a small floating Ghost voiced at launch by Peter Dinklage, and you choose between three classes: the armored Titan, the agile Hunter and the space-wizard Warlock, each with a super ability that can turn a losing fight around in seconds. Missions sweep from the Cosmodrome to the Hive-infested tunnels beneath the Moon, the drowned ruins of Venus and the red dunes of Mars, against four enemy races: the scavenging Fallen, the necromantic Hive, the time-bending Vex and the militaristic Cabal. Underneath it all is a loot chase borrowed from the RPG playbook, where every engram might hold a better rifle and exotic weapons such as the Gjallarhorn rocket launcher became legends in their own right.
Bungie built Destiny around an always-online shared world rather than a traditional single-player campaign. Three-player strikes ended in big boss fights, the Crucible hosted competitive matches, and the Vault of Glass, a six-player raid hidden on Venus, became a rite of passage for a whole community of players coordinating over headsets. The score by Marty O'Donnell and Michael Salvatori, with contributions from Paul McCartney, gives the Tower and the Cosmodrome a sweeping, choral grandeur. On PlayStation, Destiny also launched with timed-exclusive content such as the Dust Palace strike.
Destiny would go on to grow through expansions, a full sequel and years of ongoing seasons, which makes this original release the opening chapter of one of the defining console shooter franchises of the 2010s. The PS3 version is a snapshot of Bungie bridging two hardware generations at once, and it captures that launch as it reached store shelves in September 2014.
Bungie has emphasized that the universe of Destiny will be "alive". Events may happen in-game that are not necessarily controlled or planned by the developer, which will help to create a dynamic developing experience for Bungie and a dynamic playing experience for gamers. The game's style has been described a first-person shooter that will incorporate massively multiplayer online game (MMO) elements, but Bungie has avoided defining Destiny as a traditional MMO game. Instead, the game has been referred to as a "shared-world shooter," as it lacks many of the characteristics of a traditional MMO game. For instance, rather than players being able to see and interact with all other players in the game or on a particular server—as is the case in many conventional MMO games—Destiny will include on-the-fly matchmaking that will allow players to see and interact only with other players with whom they are "matched" by the game. Destiny will incorporate a new game engine that allows global illuminations and real-time dynamic lighting to occur together.
