Item Description

A tiny floating Ghost, voiced at launch by Peter Dinklage, pulls you back from death among the rusted cars of the Cosmodrome in Old Russia, and within minutes you are scrambling through Fallen-held ruins with a rifle in hand. Destiny, Bungie's first game after Halo, imagined humanity's last city sheltering beneath the Traveler, a vast and silent sphere that once brought a golden age, and asked you to push back the Fallen, Hive, Vex and Cabal who have claimed everything else.

You choose a Titan, Hunter or Warlock, each with two subclasses at launch, from the Hunter's Golden Gun to the Titan's ground-shattering Fist of Havoc and the Warlock's Nova Bomb. The shooting carries all of Bungie's Halo-honed feel: punchy recoil, crisp hit feedback and enemies that dodge, flank and rush you. Missions sweep from Earth to the Hive-infested tunnels beneath the Moon, the Vex ruins of Venus and the red sands of Mars, and the moment-to-moment combat is what kept players replaying strikes for exotic engrams night after night.

What made Destiny a phenomenon was its shared world. Other players drifted through your patrol zones, public events pulled strangers together, and the Vault of Glass, a six-player raid deep beneath Venus where fireteams had to talk to survive the Vex, became a legendary weekend ritual. The Crucible handled competitive play, Xur's weekend visits became an event in themselves, and the soundtrack by Martin O'Donnell and Michael Salvatori, with contributions from Paul McCartney, gave the whole thing a grand, melancholy sweep.

Destiny was built around online play from its first minute, and Bungie expanded it over the following years with The Dark Below, House of Wolves, The Taken King and Rise of Iron. The 2014 release is where the live-service shooter as we know it took shape, and the opening chapter of a story Bungie would go on to tell for a decade, beginning with a single Ghost searching the ruins of Old Russia.

About the game

Bungie has emphasized that the universe of Destiny will be "alive". Events may happen in-game that are not necessarily controlled or planned by the developer, which will help to create a dynamic developing experience for Bungie and a dynamic playing experience for gamers. The game's style has been described a first-person shooter that will incorporate massively multiplayer online game (MMO) elements, but Bungie has avoided defining Destiny as a traditional MMO game. Instead, the game has been referred to as a "shared-world shooter," as it lacks many of the characteristics of a traditional MMO game. For instance, rather than players being able to see and interact with all other players in the game or on a particular server—as is the case in many conventional MMO games—Destiny will include on-the-fly matchmaking that will allow players to see and interact only with other players with whom they are "matched" by the game. Destiny will incorporate a new game engine that allows global illuminations and real-time dynamic lighting to occur together.
