Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Hinokami Chronicles looks startlingly close to ufotable's anime, and that is no accident: CyberConnect2, the studio behind the Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm games, built it with the same obsessive eye for recreating animation in real time.

Solo Mode retells Tanjiro Kamado's story from the start, when his family is slaughtered and his sister Nezuko is turned into a demon, through Final Selection and the nightmare of Mount Natagumo, all the way to the end of the Mugen Train arc. Chapters mix exploration and smaller demon encounters with a boss battle at their close, and the big moments, from the fight against Rui on Natagumo to Rengoku's final stand, are staged with real care for anyone who watched them unfold on screen.

Versus Mode is where the replay value lives. You pick two fighters, a lead and a support who can leap in with an attack, pull you out of an enemy combo or swap in completely, and certain pairings unlock their own team-up moves. Every character has light and heavy attacks, a handful of special techniques and a flashy ultimate, while demons trade the support partner for Blood Demon Arts of their own. The controls are easy to pick up, which makes it a great couch fighter for anime fans who would rather pull off a cinematic finisher than memorize frame data, with head-to-head play against a friend or the CPU.

A rewards board steadily unlocks fighters, battle outfits, stages and archive extras as you play, and the roster kept growing after release through post-launch updates. The Hinokami Chronicles arrived in 2021, not long after the Mugen Train film became the highest-grossing movie ever released in Japan, and it captures the series at the height of that moment.
