Item Description
Most RPG heroes are destined for greatness. The Prince of Shanadar would rather sleep in. Defenders of Oasis opens with a royal who has a habit of missing his own court's events, and that light, likable humor runs through one of the best role-playing games Sega made for the Game Gear. Known in Japan as Shadam Crusader, it trades the usual castles and knights for a world inspired by the Arabian Nights.
Long ago the warrior Jamseed sealed away the evil wizard Ahriman. Now the empire of Eflaat is on the rise, Ahriman's minions are stirring, and Jamseed's descendant, our reluctant prince, has to step up. The journey takes the party far beyond Shanadar, with a small cast that each brings something different to battle. Saleem, a ship captain's son, can perform a dance that damages every attacking enemy. Agmar the thief can hide to dodge most attacks for a turn. And then there is the Genie.
The Genie is the party's only spellcaster, and he works unlike any companion in a typical 8-bit RPG. He never gains levels from fighting. Instead, you spend your hard-earned gold upgrading his lamp to make him stronger, which turns every shopping trip into a real decision about whether to buy armor or invest in your magic. He is also immune to poison and the other status ailments that plague the rest of the party, which makes him a dependable anchor in long dungeon crawls.
Battles are classic turn-based fare with random encounters, but the bright visuals, catchy music and sense of humor give it a personality all its own, and at least one retrospective has argued it holds up against some 16-bit RPGs. It later reached a new audience on the 3DS Virtual Console. For anyone exploring the Game Gear's surprisingly deep RPG lineup, this is the one to start with, a complete adventure with a setting and a magic system you will not find anywhere else on the system.
