Item Condition

Complete in box: the cartridge, the manual and the box, all original; anything beyond that is included only if you can see it in the photos. For the specifics, look to the photos — they're of this exact item. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.

Item Description

Defender throws more at you in its first ten seconds than most early shooters do in a whole game. Your ship streaks left and right over a wraparound planet while a scanner at the top of the screen shows the entire world at once: Landers descending, humanoids on the ground and enemies closing in from off-screen. The goal sounds noble and simple. Protect the humanoids. In practice it means racing across the map to intercept a Lander mid-abduction, shooting it down and catching the falling humanoid before it hits the ground.

Fail, and that Lander carries its captive to the top of the screen and becomes a Mutant, a fast, aggressive hunter that makes a beeline for your ship. Lose every humanoid and the planet itself is destroyed, turning every Lander into a Mutant. Bombers lay mines, Pods burst into swarms of Swarmers, and Baiters show up to hurry you along if you take too long to clear a wave. Smart bombs wipe the screen in an emergency, and hyperspace is a last-ditch gamble that can save you or land you somewhere worse.

Eugene Jarvis and Larry DeMar created the Williams arcade original in 1981, and its scrolling world, radar scanner and punishing difficulty made it one of the most influential shooters of the golden age. Atari's 1982 conversion for the 5200 keeps that pressure, with smart bombs on the controller's second fire button and hyperspace on the keypad, and it is among the most respected cartridges on the system. It is a great way to experience the game Jarvis built on home hardware, intense, fast and demanding in the best way.
