Item Description

Most games hand you a sword. Deception III: Dark Delusion hands you a floor plan. Tecmo's strange, compelling series never lets you strike an enemy directly; instead you lure armed pursuers into rooms you have rigged with traps, then watch your handiwork play out. It is part puzzle game, part strategy game and part gothic horror story, and nothing else on the PlayStation feels quite like it.

This time the victim turned avenger is Reina, an orphan whose adoptive family is seized on the orders of King Frederick of Alendar. Her family is killed, she is thrown into captivity, and the power to summon traps, granted through a glowing red stone from a mysterious benefactor, becomes her only weapon, while the kingdom's rulers take a worrying interest in the necklace she wears. From there every encounter becomes a chance to turn a castle room into a killing ground. You place your traps, then bait enemies into position. The real joy is in chaining them together, from swinging pendulums and bear claws to falling rocks, iron maidens and even a banana peel, so that one lure triggers a cascade. Traps are assembled from parts, and adding Emblems, Rings and Orbs turns a plain rock into something like the electrified Volt Rock, so the arsenal grows more powerful and more inventive as the story unfolds.

Beyond the story campaign, the game offers a Trap License mode that works as structured training, a free training mode for experimenting with layouts, and an Expert mode of timed challenges for players who want real pressure. The story branches toward four endings, decided by whom Reina spares and whom she destroys, and none of them is exactly cheerful. Reviews were respectable rather than glowing, though the Official U.S. PlayStation Magazine nominated it for Best Strategy Game, and living in the shadow of its predecessor Kagero is part of why it slipped under so many radars.

Released in Japan as Soumatou, Dark Delusion is the third Deception and the last one made for the original PlayStation; the series would resurface on the PS2 with Trapt and later with Deception IV. For players who love Tecmo's darker experiments, or who enjoy the slow satisfaction of engineering a perfect chain reaction, it is a fascinating cult curiosity with a premise that still feels wicked and original.
