Somewhere on Blackreef the clock is about to roll back to morning, and Colt Vahn still has eight people to kill. That is the whole delicious riddle of Deathloop: an island trapped in a single repeating day, eight Visionaries who must all die before midnight, and a loop that wipes the slate clean every time you fail. Arkane Studios, the team behind Dishonored, took its gift for layered, sneak-or-shoot level design and built a first-person shooter that plays like a murder mystery you solve by dying, learning and trying again.
The day is split into four periods, morning, noon, afternoon and evening, and the island into four districts: Updaam, Karl's Bay, Fristad Rock and The Complex. Each Visionary keeps a schedule, and every run hands you another piece of the puzzle: a door code, a party worth crashing, a way to lure two targets into the same place at the same time. Supernatural Slabs reshape how you play, from Shift for blinking across rooftops to Aether for turning invisible and Nexus for linking enemies so that one kill drops the whole group. Residuum lets you infuse favorite weapons and powers so they survive the reset, and Reprise lets Colt shrug off a couple of deaths in each district before the loop snaps back.
Standing in his way is Julianna Blake, the rival assassin who wants the loop protected and who hunts Colt across the island. Their running radio banter, voiced by Jason E. Kelley and Ozioma Akagha, gives the story its bite and its humor. Julianna can be controlled by the game's AI, and Arkane also designed her as a role another player could step into, invading Colt's day for a tense game of cat and mouse.
All of it wears a gleefully stylish 1960s skin: mod color schemes, brutalist bunkers, retro-futurist gadgets like the Hackamajig and a swaggering spy-movie score by Tom Salta. The art and direction earned Deathloop Best Game Direction and Best Art Direction at The Game Awards 2021. It launched on PlayStation 5 as a console exclusive, and the DualSense was part of the pitch, with adaptive triggers that lock up when a gun jams. The real upgrade, though, is knowledge, and the moment your notes finally line up into one perfect, airtight loop is a rush few shooters can match.
