Few games ask you to care this much about keeping your balance. In Death Stranding, a heavy pack, a steep slope or a fast river becomes real drama, and every delivery turns into a small expedition across a broken America. It was Hideo Kojima's first game after leaving Konami, released in 2019, and the Director's Cut brought it to PlayStation 5 in 2021 with new content and features tuned for the console.

You play Sam Porter Bridges, portrayed by Norman Reedus, a courier tasked with reconnecting the scattered cities of the United Cities of America to a chiral network after the Death Stranding filled the world with ghostly BTs and a rain called Timefall that ages whatever it touches. Mads Mikkelsen, Léa Seydoux, Troy Baker and Margaret Qualley join a cast as strange as the story, which builds from mystery into something surprisingly moving about connection, loss and what it means to carry someone.

The gameplay is unlike anything else. You plan routes over mountains and rivers, manage weight and balance with the triggers, creep past BTs while holding your breath and build ladders, ropes, bridges and roads to make the next trip easier. The game was also built around its Social Strand System, an asynchronous online layer that let structures and signs left by other players appear in your world, turning a solitary trek into a quiet kind of cooperation.

The Director's Cut adds plenty to discover. New story missions lead Sam into an abandoned factory, there is a firing range and a racing circuit for time trials, and new gear includes the support skeleton, the cargo catapult, the maser gun, chiral bridges and the helpful Buddy Bot. On PS5 the DualSense haptics and adaptive triggers make the strain of every step more tactile, with faster loading and a smoother performance mode. If you only played the original, this is the version to return to; if you never have, it is the most complete way to make the journey.
