Item Description

Death Stranding asks you to walk, and then turns walking into the most tense thing you have ever done with a controller. Hideo Kojima's first game after leaving Konami, made by his re-founded Kojima Productions and published by Sony, casts Norman Reedus as Sam Porter Bridges, a courier hauling cargo across a shattered America. On paper the pitch sounds strange. In practice it is hypnotic.

An event called the Death Stranding has torn open the boundary between the living and the dead. Invisible BTs drift across the landscape, and Timefall, a rain that ages whatever it touches, eats away at cargo and gear alike. Sam's job is to cross the continent from east to west, reconnecting isolated settlements to the Chiral Network and bringing them into the United Cities of America. Along the way he carries BB, an infant in a pod whose link to the other side lets him sense the BTs, and crosses paths with a striking cast: Mads Mikkelsen's haunted soldier Cliff, Léa Seydoux's Fragile, Troy Baker's theatrical villain Higgs and a character modeled on Guillermo del Toro named Deadman.

The brilliance is in the physical details. Every package has weight, and a badly stacked load sends Sam staggering, so you lean on the triggers to keep your balance while picking your way down a rocky slope or fording a river. Ladders, climbing anchors, vehicles, exoskeletons and eventually ziplines and rebuilt highways turn route planning into a puzzle of its own. The game was built around what Kojima called the Social Strand System, where structures other players placed in their own worlds could appear in yours, bridges and shelters left by strangers and thanked with likes, so the whole continent felt quietly shared even though you never meet another porter.

Ludvig Forssell's score and a run of melancholy Low Roar songs that fade in at just the right moments on long hikes turn the Iceland-inspired wilderness into something strangely beautiful. Death Stranding divided critics at release and built a passionate following anyway, and its themes of isolation and connection struck an unexpected chord in the years that followed. This PS4 release is where Kojima's singular experiment began, the first chapter of a story he continued in Death Stranding 2: On the Beach.
