Item Description

Deadpool does not so much star in this game as hijack it. It opens with Wade Wilson in his grubby apartment, phoning High Moon Studios to bully them into making his game, and from there he never stops commenting on the script, the budget or the player holding the controller. Written by longtime Deadpool comic writer Daniel Way and voiced by Nolan North, it captures the Merc with a Mouth's chaotic, fourth-wall-smashing energy better than almost any licensed game has managed for a Marvel character.

The plot gives the jokes something to bounce off. A routine hit goes wrong when Mister Sinister steals his target, and Deadpool's quest for revenge drags him into a much bigger scheme involving Sinister's Marauders and an army of clones. Cable, Wolverine, Rogue and Domino all turn up, mostly to be annoyed by him, and the trip includes a stop in the ruins of Genosha. Gameplay mixes katana combos with pistols, shotguns and heavier hardware, plus short-range teleporting to escape trouble, and the points you earn are spent on new moves and weapons.

The fun is in how often the game breaks its own rules. Deadpool "runs out of budget" mid-level, interrupts cutscenes, flirts with Death, and drops into retro-styled segments, including a top-down 8-bit stretch, purely because he feels like it. Reviews at the time were mixed on the combat, which can get repetitive, but the writing and the voice performance won it a loyal following. Rarely has a game this crude been this committed to a bit.

Licensing issues later pulled Deadpool from digital storefronts. If you want to hear Nolan North's Deadpool in full flow, or you're building a shelf of Marvel games from the PS3 era, this is a loud, ridiculous and very funny pick.

About the game

In Deadpool the player takes control of the loud-mouthed, foul-mouthed, merc-with-a-mouth Wade Wilson (a.k.a. Deadpool). While on out on a contract to kill a corrupt media mogul, Mister Sinister intervenes and kills him instead, drawing the ire of Deadpool who then vows revenge only to stumble upon a bigger plot which could spell the end of humanity. With the help of some of the X-Men such as Wolverine, Rogue and Domino along with a buddy from the future, Cable, they band together to stop Mister Sinister and his group of Marauders (Arclight, Blockbuster and Vertigo) from succeeding.
