Item Description
Somewhere between a 1930s matinee serial and a first-person shooter sits Deadfall Adventures, The Farm 51's 2013 love letter to pulp treasure hunting. You play James Lee Quatermain, the great-grandson of Allan Quatermain from H. Rider Haggard's adventure novels, a cocky fortune hunter drawn in 1938 into a race for the Heart of Atlantis against Nazi and Soviet forces who want its power for themselves.
The expedition runs from Egyptian tombs to the frozen Arctic and overgrown Mayan ruins, and much of it is spent doing what pulp heroes do best: dodging traps, deciphering old clues and solving environmental puzzles. Allan's own journal is your guide, holding the hints for getting past each booby-trapped chamber, while a compass sniffs out hidden treasures that permanently strengthen James. The flashlight is more than a light source, too. Mummies and other supernatural guardians recoil from its beam, so you burn them back with light before your revolver or shotgun finishes the job.
Critics were hard on it, calling the shooting stiff and the story predictable, and nobody will mistake it for Uncharted. But the game knows exactly what it wants to be, and its best moments, cracking a trapped tomb or holding off the walking dead with a flashlight, have the B-movie charm of a Saturday afternoon adventure film, Nazis and curses included.
The Farm 51 had just come off Painkiller: Hell & Damnation and would go on to make Get Even and Chernobylite, and Deadfall shows the studio already chasing atmosphere and old-fashioned adventure over polish. As a late Xbox 360 curiosity with an Indiana Jones heart, it is an uncomplicated treasure hunt that is easy to like on its own pulpy terms.
