Death himself is on the clock in Deadbolt, and the job is ugly. Hopoo Games, the small studio behind Risk of Rain, casts you as the Reaper, sent into the underworld of a rotting city to put down an undead uprising one building at a time. Every mission is a compact side-view slice of nightclubs, tenements and gang hideouts, and every one of them can kill you with a single bullet.
That fragility is the whole design. Ammunition is scarce, you can carry only two weapons, and bullet spread makes a long shot a real gamble. So you play like a predator: dissolve into smoke and slip through the vents, knock on a door to draw a guard, kill the lights and wait. The enemies are just as distinct as your options. Green-skinned zombie gangsters patrol the halls, club-going vampires walk across the ceiling, skeletons keep pulling themselves back together, and some foes keep their life force sealed in a jar that has to be smashed before they stay down. Severed zombie heads even serve as makeshift security cameras.
When a plan collapses, it collapses spectacularly, with expressive sprite gore and ragdoll bodies tumbling down stairwells, and a restart is a button press away. Missions pay out a currency that unlocks new weapons, so progress comes from a growing arsenal and your own sharpening instincts rather than character stats. Composer Chris Christodoulou, whose Risk of Rain soundtrack made his name, wraps the carnage in laid-back, groovy tracks that sit oddly and wonderfully against all the bloodshed.
Deadbolt won over players who loved the trial-and-error brutality of Hotline Miami but wanted more patience and planning in the mix, with a harder difficulty waiting for those who clear the campaign. It is the game Hopoo made between Risk of Rain and that game's blockbuster sequel, and on PS4 it shows how sharp the studio's design sense is outside the roguelike genre that made it famous.
