Item Description
Frank West has covered wars, you know, and in Dead Rising 4 the photojournalist from the original game finally comes home to Willamette, Colorado, where his career as a zombie survivor began. This time it is the holiday season, and a new outbreak has turned the enormous Willamette Memorial Megaplex Mall and the snowy town around it into a festive nightmare of shoppers, decorations and the walking dead.
Capcom Vancouver leaned all the way into spectacle. Frank can craft combo weapons on the fly from whatever he finds, and the Christmas setting means plenty of the arsenal is seasonal mayhem, with holiday decorations turned against huge crowds of zombies. The headline addition is the Exo Suit, a piece of military hardware Frank can climb into for a burst of mechanized strength, ripping up streetlights and swinging oversized weapons to clear whole crowds at once.
Frank's camera returns as more than a scoring tool. Investigation sequences have him photographing and analyzing scenes to piece together what caused the new outbreak, and the open town rewards exploration with blueprints, collectibles and survivors to find. Dead Rising 4 also dropped the strict time limit that defined the earlier games, a change that divided longtime fans but made it the most relaxed, accessible entry in the series, one where you can wander the mall and experiment with no clock forcing your hand.
It is the lightest, goofiest and most purely sandbox Dead Rising, a holiday-themed zombie romp with a returning hero whose wisecracking is half the fun. On Xbox One it makes a natural companion to Dead Rising 3, closing the loop on Frank West's story in the same Colorado town where the series started.
