When the Xbox One launched in November 2013, Dead Rising 3 showed off the new hardware in the most direct way imaginable: by filling the streets with more zombies than most players had ever seen on screen at once. Developed by Capcom Vancouver and published by Microsoft as a launch exclusive, it moved the series out of the shopping mall and into an entire city, Los Perdidos, California, with districts that flow into one another without loading screens.
The hero this time is Nick Ramos, a young mechanic with a mysterious tattoo, trapped in the city ten years after the events of Dead Rising 2 with a military strike on the way. Nick needs other survivors to get out, and the story balances the series' gallows humor with a genuine countdown to escape. Being a mechanic suits him: Dead Rising 3 lets you build combo weapons anywhere, straight from your inventory, once you have found the blueprint, instead of hunting for a workbench. Combo vehicles take the same idea to the road, bolting together cars and machinery into ridiculous zombie-clearing contraptions.
The structure is far more forgiving than earlier entries, letting you explore and experiment without constantly racing the clock, while Nightmare Mode brings back the strict time limit and tougher zombies for players who want the classic pressure. Psychopath boss fights, side missions for stranded survivors and a sprawling list of weapons to discover give the city plenty to do, and the game was designed with two-player co-op in mind for the full story.
Dead Rising 3 is the series at its most expansive and excessive, the moment it traded tight mall corridors for a full open-world playground. It is a time capsule of the Xbox One's first days and still a great way to spend an evening seeing how many ways a sledgehammer, a chainsaw and a stretch of highway can combine.

About the game
Available exclusively for Xbox One and Windows, Dead Rising 3 marks the return of one of the most popular zombie video game franchises. Set 10 years after the events of Fortune City in Dead Rising 2, players are introduced to Nick Ramos, a young mechanic with a strange tattoo and a mysterious past, who must find a way to escape a city full of zombies before an impending military strike wipes the city of Los Perdidos, California, and everyone in it, off the map. Nick can’t do it alone – he must join up with other survivors to stay alive. They must fight their way out before it’s too late.
