Item Description

Before anyone had played a minute of it, Dead Island was famous for a trailer: a family's last moments in a resort hotel room, told in reverse and in slow motion. The game Techland actually made is a different animal, and for a lot of players a more fun one: a sun-soaked, first-person melee brawler in which a holiday on the island of Banoi collapses into a zombie outbreak and your best defense is whatever you can pick up and improve at a workbench.

You choose one of four survivors, each with a skill tree built around a specialty. Logan Carter is a washed-up football star who favors throwing weapons, Sam B is the rapper whose one hit, "Who Do You Voodoo," is playing all over the resort, Xian Mei is a hotel employee skilled with blades, and Purna is an ex-cop most at home with firearms. Weapons wear down, so you are always scavenging, repairing and modding them with blueprints into electrified, flaming or otherwise upgraded tools of survival. Kicks, stamina management and the ability to break and sever limbs give the combat a crunchy, physical feel that set it apart from the shooting-first zombie games of its day.

Banoi is a proper open world for its era, moving from the beaches and bungalows of the Royal Palms Resort into the ruined city of Moresby, a dense jungle and finally a prison as the survivors fight to get off the island. It was designed around drop-in co-op for up to four players, and that shared chaos, one friend kicking a walker into the surf while another lines up a thrown machete, is how many people remember it.

The Game of the Year Edition is Deep Silver's 2012 re-release, built around the post-launch content: the Bloodbath Arena survival challenges and Ryder White, a short campaign that tells part of the story from the perspective of the military colonel whose voice guides the survivors over the radio. Dead Island went on to spawn Riptide and, years later, Dead Island 2, but the original trip to Banoi is where Techland first worked out the melee-and-crafting formula it would sharpen in Dying Light, and playing it on the Xbox 360 puts you right back on that sweltering, zombie-choked resort.

About the game

The player is drawn into the world of Dead Island on the brink of a mysterious epidemic that suddenly, and without warning, breaks out on the fictional island of Banoi. As a guest of the Royal Palms Resort, the player's stay was supposed to be a dream holiday; a luxurious getaway to the beautiful beaches of a tropical paradise. But faced with the reality of a zombie apocalypse, there is only one thing left to do: Survive. This is Dead Island; a paradise to die for.
