Los Angeles has gone to hell, and somehow it still looks fantastic. Dead Island 2 turns the sun-bleached mansions of Bel-Air, the boardwalk at Venice Beach and the lights of the Santa Monica Pier into Hell-A, a quarantined playground of gore, gallows humor and improvised weapons. It is also a sequel that almost never happened: first announced in 2014, it passed through several studios before Dambuster Studios finally brought it home for Deep Silver in 2023, and the finished game turned out to be far more fun than a long development saga had any right to produce.

The heart of it is melee combat, and Dambuster built a gore system called FLESH to make every hit count. Zombies come apart layer by layer: skin peels, limbs snap, flesh burns or dissolves depending on what you hit them with, so you can read exactly how much damage you are doing. Weapons can be modded with fire, electricity and caustic effects, and the environment is part of the arsenal, with water puddles to electrify, fuel cans to ignite and throwable Curveballs such as Meat Bait to lure a crowd exactly where you want it.

You pick one of six Slayers, Jacob, Amy, Bruno, Carla, Dani or Ryan, each with innate traits that favor a different style, from dodging and critical hits to blocking and brute strength. A Skill Card system lets you reshape your build at any time, so a careful counter-puncher can become a reckless berserker the moment a new card unlocks. The campaign is built for solo play or co-op with up to three players, and it keeps its tongue planted firmly in cheek, with a cast of self-absorbed influencers, washed-up actors and survivalists to help (or ignore) along the way.

Dead Island 2 is the zombie game for people who want the B-movie fun rather than the misery. It is loud, colorful and gleefully violent, and on Xbox Series X the detail of the FLESH system and the sprawl of Hell-A's neighborhoods make every street fight a little more spectacular than the last.
