Item Description

Delphine Software, the French studio behind Flashback, took its own swing at the Diablo formula with Darkstone, and the result is a dungeon crawler with a fairy-tale streak. Draak, a corrupt monk who turned against the goddess Kaliba, has returned as a dragon and forged the Darkstone, an artifact that drains the life from the land of Uma. The only way to stop him is to recover the seven crystals of the Time Orb, made from Kaliba's tears, and carry it into his lair.

Character creation starts with paired archetypes: warrior or amazon, wizard or sorceress, assassin or thief, monk or priestess. From there you shape your hero through stats, gear, a library of 32 learnable spells and practical skills such as lockpicking and trap disarming, heading back to a central village to trade, bank your gold and restock between expeditions. Four lands, Ardyl, Marghor, Omar and Serkesh, open up in sequence and grow steadily more dangerous, so each new region feels like a real step up.

Randomization is what keeps it replayable. Each new game draws its quests from a pool of twenty, and that selection reshapes which dungeons appear and how the lands are laid out, so a second run rarely looks like the first. The PlayStation version, released in North America by Take-Two Interactive in early 2001, focuses the adventure on a single hero rather than the PC original's switchable pair, which makes it a more direct, controller-friendly crawl.

Critics at the time saw it as a straightforward hack-and-slash rather than a genre landmark, and that is part of its charm now: a no-nonsense loot-and-level grind on a console with very few games built quite like it. Players who have already worn out Tristram will find a different flavor of the same compulsive loop here, from a European studio with a distinctive 1990s pedigree.

About the game

Darkstone is an action role-playing game with a medieval fantasy setting, played solo or in multiplayer and often compared to Diablo. Players choose from paired character types such as warrior or Amazon, wizard or sorceress, assassin or thief, and monk or priestess, then travel across four increasingly difficult lands to complete quests, fight monsters, and explore dungeons. Gameplay centers on improving character stats and gear, learning spells from spellbooks, and picking up skills like lockpicking and trap disarming, while a central village serves as a hub for trading, banking, and restocking supplies. Randomly selected quests and shifting dungeon layouts vary each playthrough.
