Item Description

Dark Souls III begins with a corpse sitting up in a graveyard and ends at the very edge of the world. FromSoftware's 2016 finale to the trilogy, directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki after his work on Bloodborne, sends you to the kingdom of Lothric as the Ashen One, an Unkindled warrior who failed to link the fire in life and has been raised again to drag the Lords of Cinder back to the thrones they abandoned while the First Flame gutters out.

Bloodborne's speed runs through everything. Rolls are quicker, enemies press harder, and Weapon Arts give every weapon its own special technique powered by a new FP gauge, from shield bashes and ready stances to the spinning sweeps of curved swords. The Estus Flask splits into healing Estus and Ashen Estus for FP, so casters and melee fighters alike are always balancing two resources, and sorceries, miracles and pyromancies all support distinct builds.

From the hub of Firelink Shrine and its quiet Fire Keeper, Lothric unfolds through the High Wall, the rotting Cathedral of the Deep, the frozen splendor of Irithyll of the Boreal Valley and a return to a darkened Anor Londo that stops Dark Souls veterans in their tracks. The boss roster is the trilogy's finest: the Abyss Watchers turning on one another mid-fight, Pontiff Sulyvahn's twin blades, Aldrich, Devourer of Gods, the towering Yhorm the Giant, the Twin Princes Lothric and Lorian and the optional Nameless King, all carried by a towering score led by Yuka Kitamura and Motoi Sakuraba.

Messages scrawled by other players, bloodstains and summon signs were built into the design from the start, but the game is every bit as gripping played alone. The finale ties threads together from across the series, revisiting places and ideas from the original Dark Souls in ways that land hardest if you know what came before, and the last fight at the Kiln of the First Flame is a closing statement few games have matched. If you only keep one Souls game for Xbox One, make it the fastest, most polished and most confident of the three.
