Majula at sunset, with the sea glittering below and the Emerald Herald waiting quietly by the cliff, is the closest thing Dark Souls II has to a home, and you will be grateful for it. Everything beyond that seaside village is trying to kill you. FromSoftware's sequel drops you into the fallen kingdom of Drangleic as an Undead, cursed and slowly going Hollow, searching for a cure and drawn into the story of King Vendrick and his mysterious queen, Nashandra.
Scholar of the First Sin is the definitive version. Rebuilt for PlayStation 4 at 1080p and 60 frames per second, it gathers all three Crown expansions, Crown of the Sunken King, Crown of the Old Iron King and Crown of the Ivory King, home to some of the best areas and boss fights in the game. It also remixes the original's enemy placements, so even veterans find fresh ambushes waiting in familiar corridors, and adds a new character, Aldia, the Scholar of the First Sin, whose appearances expand the lore and cast the ending in a new light.
This is the most build-friendly game in the original trilogy. Power stancing lets you wield two weapons at once, the spell and weapon variety is enormous, and the Bonfire Ascetic lets you raise the difficulty of individual areas for better rewards. Bosses range from the Pursuer, who stalks you through the early game, to the molten Smelter Demon and the duel-perfect Sir Alonne, while the Fume Knight is regularly named among the toughest fights FromSoftware has ever designed. You can warp between bonfires from early on, a clear break from the first game's interlocking world that makes Drangleic feel like a sprawling network of separate, hostile places.
Dark Souls II has always been the most debated entry in the series, directed by Tomohiro Shibuya and Yui Tanimura rather than Hidetaka Miyazaki, and that difference is exactly what makes it worth playing. It is stranger, bigger and more experimental than its siblings, and its multiplayer was built around covenants, co-op summons and invasions with a culture all their own. On PS4, Scholar of the First Sin is the complete package and the version to play.
Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin is an enhanced edition of Dark Souls II, released in April 2015 by FromSoftware and Bandai Namco Entertainment. This version includes updated graphics, improved performance, and all previously released DLC expansions (Crown of the Sunken King, Crown of the Old Iron King, and Crown of the Ivory King). It also features rebalanced gameplay, new enemy placements, additional NPCs, and expanded lore,
