Item Description

You rest at a bonfire in Firelink Shrine, ride an elevator down from the Undead Parish and realize, with a jolt, that you are back where you started. That moment of discovery is the magic of Dark Souls. FromSoftware's 2011 action RPG, directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment, built Lordran as one vast interlocking world, a place you learn the way you learn a real city, shortcut by hard-won shortcut.

As the Chosen Undead you set out to ring the two Bells of Awakening, a quest that leads through the Undead Burg and the poisonous depths of Blighttown and only opens the door to a longer journey through the trap-filled halls of Sen's Fortress and the golden cathedral city of Anor Londo. Combat is deliberate and physical: every swing costs stamina, every roll has to be timed, and enemies hit hard enough that patience matters more than reflexes. Estus Flasks restore your health, bonfires save your progress and respawn enemies, and dying drops your souls on the spot, giving you one chance to fight your way back and reclaim them.

The bosses are legendary. The Bell Gargoyles on the church rooftop, the Capra Demon in its tiny arena and the brutal two-on-one battle against Ornstein and Smough are rites of passage. Characters like the sun-worshipping Solaire of Astora and the onion-armored Siegmeyer of Catarina lend warmth to a melancholy world, and Motoi Sakuraba's score swells only when it matters. Underneath all of it sit deep systems of builds, weapon scaling, spell schools and covenants, plus lore told through sparse item descriptions that fans have spent years decoding. The game was also built around asynchronous online features: messages scrawled by other players, bloodstains replaying their deaths and summon signs for co-op and invasion.

Dark Souls spawned a genre, inspired countless imitators and made "Souls-like" part of every gamer's vocabulary. This PlayStation 3 disc is the original 2011 release, the game in the form that first won players over before the later editions and remasters. For an action RPG player, there is still nothing quite like reaching Anor Londo for the first time.
